BoF event:

There is a CAcert BoF (Birds of a Feather) session scheduled for Tuesday evening 11 November 2014 at 9:00pm in the Ballard room of the Sheraton Seattle Hotel. This event is free of charge and open to all. No conference badge or USENIX membership is required.

You may also visit the Overview of USENIX/LISA conferences where we have held similar CAcert Assurance Events.

Concept:

LISA '14 takes place November 9-14, 2014, in Seattle, WA. Join us for training sessions, invited talks, papers presenting the latest research; workshops and more. This year's keynote address will be "Open Compute Project and the Changing Data Center" from Ken Patchett, Director of Data Center Operations, Western Region, Facebook.

The LISA conference has long served as the annual vendor-neutral meeting place for the wider system administration community. The LISA'14 program recognizes the overlap and differences between traditional and modern IT operations and engineering, and has developed a highly-curated program around 5 key topics: Systems Engineering, Security, Culture, DevOps, and Monitoring/Metrics.

For 28 years, LISA has been the meeting place for system and network admins. Created for and by Sysadmins, it’s put on by USENIX, a non-profit organization that’s been working with the advanced technology community since 1975.

Presentation:

I have a slide presentation that I will use to begin the CAcert Assurance session. The slides will educate and inform those interested in joining and possibly becoming an assurer with CAcert. It includes discussion of whole assurance process, the points system, the Assurer's Challenge and where to look for additional information. I will also cover the recent changes to the Community Agreement. I have updated the slides that I used in previous years.

Those who attend wanting to be assurered are asked to visit the CAcert web site and join CAcert (create an account) before the event. There is a "Join CAcert" selection on the top right of the web page. When you complete the registration form, please be sure the name you use matches the ID documents you will bring to the Event. You will need to review the community agreement to complete your registration. You should then print out several copies of the WoT form. I recommend that you bring at least three copies. You will want one form for each assurance. The WoT form will have your name and such already entered.

There will be a several active assurers at the event. Please bring one (or preferably two) forms of ID with you. Government issued photo IDs are recommended. With just two assurances, you can collect enough points (min. 50 points) for a CAcert X.509 certificate with your name and e-mail tied to it. You will need at least three assurances in order to collect enough points (100) to become an assurer yourself. Once you earn enough points to begin doing assurances, you can gain experience by assuring those of us who assure you. Doing mutual assurances is a very effective training method and it is encouraged at events like this.

While it is not necessary that you register and print out forms in advance of the event, it is highly recommended. I will have blank forms available at the event. Of course all are welcome to simply sit in on the presentation to learn more about CAcert. Please feel free to contact me (KenSchumacher) if you need any additional information prior to the event.

I ask that any qualified assurers who can attend the event, please add your information in the table below or send me your info and I can edit you into the list. Assurers are encouraged to bring several WoT forms with their own information pre-printed so that our new assurers can gain experience by assuring you.

Location

We will be meeting in the Ballard meeting room of the Sheraton Seattle Hotel. I am leading two BoFS in this room. The GPG Key signing BoF will be 8-9pm and the CAcert BoF will be 9-10pm.

Admission to the BoF sessions is free. No ticket or conference badge is required. You need not be a member of USENIX or other organization affiliated with this conference. It is recommended that you sign-up for a free account with CAcert.org before the event. Please read the note under 'Presentation' above.

CAcert Assurer Pins: I have CAcert Assurer pins available for those who can verify to me that they have qualified as an Assurer. The easiest way to do that is to assure me. I will have CAP forms with my information and will have proper ID so that you can complete an assurance. Once I receive an email confirming that you have assured me I will provide you with a pin (as long as they last). Personally, I keep that pin on my event badge so that other attendees will know that I can help them with CAcert assurances.

Finding Ken at the Conference

I should be very easy to find at the LISA'14 conference. I am the guy with the blue Rollator (like a walker but it has four wheels). I have a disability and the Rollator keeps me from falling down and embarrassing myself or hurting someone else. You can also contact me via Twitter (@n9kju) or send me an e-mail <ken AT SPAMFREE cacert DOT org>.

I am a Senior Assurer and also a TTP Assurance Admin for the USA. I would be happy to meet with anyone during the conference to answer your questions or help you through our process.
